What Is the Outernet and Is It the Future of the Internet?

I am impressed by the ingenuity that is being brought to bear to solve the challenge of connecting the 4 billion people who lack access to the internet.

Lantern’s approach is singularly unique, combining low-cost satellite transmissions with a solar-powered receiver to push content all around the world.

Two major challenges remain: how to provide bi-directional communication, to enable participants to be more than consumers, but actual participants. The second is how to ensure that the content shared is in the best interests of the consumers–in the current model, only individuals with access to the internet would have a say in what content is made available over the Outernet.

This is a project to watch, certainly!
